‘Opong’ hits Oriental Mindoro, wind signals remain

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported Friday that severe tropical storm ‘Opong’ made another landfall over Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro after passing through Sibuyan and Tablas Islands in Romblon.

Based on its 2:00 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said the storm “will emerge over the Mindoro Strait this afternoon and head towards the West Philippine Sea.” It was last tracked in the vicinity of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

‘Opong’ has been moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph. PAGASA said it may re-intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours before leaving the Philippine area of responsibility by tomorrow.

Forecasters warned of moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights reaching 1.0 to 3.0 m over the coastal localities of Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Calamian Islands, Masbate including Burias Island, Aklan, and Antique.

As of this posting, the following tropical cyclone wind signals remain hoisted in areas across Luzon and Visayas, while PAGASA lifted the Signal No. 1 earlier raised for Mindanao:

Visayas – The northwestern portion of Aklan (Malay, Nabas, Buruanga) and Caluya Islands
