The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed the southern Batanes and northeastern Cagayan under tropical cyclone wind signal no. 3 amid the onslaught of super typhoon ‘Nando’ in northern Luzon.
In a 5:00 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said the towns of Mahatao, Uyugan, Basco, Ivana and Sabtang in Batanes, as well as Santa Ana in mainland Cagayan and the Babuyan Islands may expect strong winds as ‘Nando’ continues to approach.
The super typhoon was tracked at 450 kilometers East of Aparri, Cagayan by early Sunday evening. It was moving west northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph) packing winds at 185 kph and gusts of up to 230 kph.
PAGASA advised that the highest wind signal that may be hoisted throughout the passage of ‘Nando’ is Signal No. 5. It noted that the southwest monsoon and the trough of the super typhoon will be responsible for strong to gale-force winds that may take place in coastal and upland areas.
