‘Nando’ now a super typhoon, wind signals up in parts of Luzon

Super typhoon ‘Nando’ was officially unleashed Sunday packing winds of up to 185 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness reaching 230 kph, threatening all northern Luzon provinces in its path as tropical cyclone wind signals remain in affected areas.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), ‘Nando’ was located at 535 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan as of 11:00 a.m. It was moving westward at 15 kph.

PAGASA reiterated that this super typhoon may cause “life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3.0 meters within the next 48 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Weather forecasters raised wind signals over the following locations:

·         Isabela (San Mariano, Ilagan City, Tumauini, Cabagan, Palanan, Divilacan, Maconacon, San Pablo, Santa Maria, Santo Tomas, Delfin Albano, Quezon)

·         Apayao

·         Kalinga (Rizal, City of Tabuk, Pinukpuk), and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Vintar, Carasi, Adams, Dumalneg, Pagudpud, Bangui, Burgos, Pasuquin)

SIGNAL NO. 3

·         The rest of Isabela and Kalinga

·         Quirino

·         Nueva Vizcaya

·         Abra

·         Mountain Province

·         Ifugao

·         Benguet

·         Ilocos Norte

·         Ilocos Sur

·         La Union

·         Pangasinan

·         Zambales (Santa Cruz, Candelaria, Masinloc, Palauig)

PAGASA has earlier noted that ‘Nando’ may make a landfall over Batanes or Babuyan Islands between Monday afternoon and evening, before it exits the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday early morning, according to its forecast.
