‘Nando’ strengthens into severe tropical storm

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) on late Friday evening reported that tropical cyclone “Nando” has intensified into a severe tropical storm.

According to the state weather bureau’s 5 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin on Saturday, Nando further strengthened as it moved northwestward over the Philippine Sea.

Its location was last estimated 780 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora.

Moving northwestward at 10 kilometers per hour (kph), Nando now has maximum sustained winds of 100 kph near its center and gusts of up to 125 kph.

No tropical cyclone wind signal is currently raised.

PAGASA said that the severe tropical storm will strengthen the Southwest Monsoon as it approaches the Philippine landmass.
