The Department of Energy and Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) have launched the first Philippines-Indonesia Joint Energy Working Group Meeting.

The two countries exchanged insights and proposed potential areas for collaboration, including aligning policies, sharing knowledge on regulatory frameworks and best practices and conducting resource and market assessments. The talks also covered trade and investment cooperation.

“Moving forward, the respective working teams will identify and finalize priority areas of collaboration aimed at delivering tangible outcomes during the initial three-year term of the MOU,” the DOE said.

The partnership is an offshoot of the memorandum of understanding signed by the countries in January 2024. The agreement, signed during the state visit of then-Indonesian President Joko Widodo to the Philippines, aims to promote long-term supply agreements for key energy commodities like coal and liquefied natural gas.

The two countries have established working groups to explore cooperation in areas such as upstream and downstream oil and gas, renewable energy, electric vehicles and broader energy transition strategies.

The next Joint Energy Working Group Meeting is scheduled to be held in Manila in 2026.
