The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday said Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5 may be hoisted throughout the passage of Tropical Depression “Nando.”
The state weather bureau said that Nando has a possibility to reach super typhoon category.
It may also potentially enhance the southwest monsoon as it approaches the Philippine landmass.
Signal No. 1 will be hoisted over northern Luzon as early as Saturday.
Meanwhile, the tropical cyclone is less likely to directly affect the weather in the next 48 hours. The onset of heavy rains due to Nando and the southwest monsoon is likewise possible by September 21 or 22.
The center of the tropical depression was last estimated at 1,260 kilometers east of Central Luzon. It was moving northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
It is forecast to move slowly northwestward or west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea in the next 48 hours. Afterward, it will turn west-northwestward or westward by Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning toward extreme northern Luzon.
