CABUYAO City—Department of Transportation acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez led the inspection of old railway stations in Laguna province that are set to be demolished to give way for a modern project.
The inspection by DOTr officials focused on the at-grade Philippine National Railways (PNR) stations in Cabuyao and Santa Rosa. The stations will be dismantled to make way for 18 modern elevated stations under the South Commuter Railway Project.
The South Commuter Railway is a key component of the North-South Commuter Railway system.
The DOTr said right-of-way negotiations are expected to be completed by end-2026. This step is crucial to ensuring the project proceeds without delays.
Once operational, the railway is expected to reduce travel time across Luzon, shortening the trip from Clark in Pampanga to Calamba in Laguna to about two hours.
DOTr officials said the project, targeted to begin operations by 2030 or 2031, would ease traffic congestion, provide a safer and more efficient transport system and boost economic activity across the Greater Manila Area and nearby provinces.
