The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday officially proclaimed the Gabriela Women’s Party as the 64th winning party-list organization in the May 2025 elections, solidifying their seat at the House of Representatives for the 20th Congress.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the proclamation ensured that the party-list sector meets the constitutional requirement of comprising 20% of the House membership. The poll body increased the party-list seats from 63 to 64 to comply with the 1987 Constitution.
Gabriela party-list Rep. Sarah Jane Elago attended the proclamation ceremony as the first nominee. She said the organization will continue to advocate for laws supporting women’s rights, genuine agrarian reform, and affordable basic goods.
Elago will resume her legislative work and is expected to rejoin the Makabayan Bloc in the lower chamber, succeeding former Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, who represented the organization since 2016.
Elago previously served in the Kabataan party-list from 2016 to 2022, which is now represented by lawyer and youth leader Rep. Renee Louise Co.
Gabriela ranked 55th in the party-list race with 256,811 votes. It secured the last party-list seat after the Comelec en banc upheld the cancellation of registration of Duterte Youth over its failure to provide substantial evidence disproving the grounds for its disqualification.
