Could Vice Ganda one day take center stage in politics? Award-winning filmmaker Lav Diaz thinks so.
In a recent guesting on Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast with directors Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac, Diaz shared his belief that the comedy superstar embodies the kind of influence pop culture can bring to society.
“Serious ako. Vice Ganda has that kind of power,” Diaz said, noting that the It’s Showtime host has long been an icon whose reach goes beyond entertainment.
“Kasi ang labanan ngayon ay myth-making. Sino ba ang pinaka-icon sa pop culture ngayon? Vice Ganda. At maganda rin ang pananaw ni Vice, gamitin natin—let’s use that,” he explained.
Diaz added that putting Vice at the forefront could shift perspectives. “Part of educating [the masses] is to put Vice Ganda there. Kaya mag-campaign na tayo—Vice, go! Gawin na siyang kilusan. A movement—Vice Ganda for president.”
Diaz, whose latest film Magellan is the Philippines’ official entry to the 98th Academy Awards, said the idea may sound unusual but stressed: “Seryoso ‘yan, seryoso.”
