President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will not personally attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month, delegating his engagements to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) so he can focus on domestic concerns, Malacañang confirmed Monday.
“The President has delegated his engagements at the UNGA to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to allow him to focus on local issues,” Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez told reporters in a message.
DFA Secretary Theresa Lazaro is expected to speak for the Philippines on key issues of regional security, economic recovery, climate change, and sustainable development at the upcoming UNGA later this month in the United States.
Recently, President Marcos formed the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI), tasked with probing alleged anomalies in infrastructure contracts across multiple agencies.
Flood control projects have drawn particular scrutiny after reports of overpriced contracts and substandard work. The inquiry, however, also covers road construction, bridges, and other major public works, reflecting broader concerns about systemic corruption.
The probe is being closely watched amid mounting public concern over transparency and the use of public funds.
Moreover, President Marcos’ decision to remain in the country also comes ahead of a large protest set for September 21, which organizers say will highlight public anger over corruption scandals and demand greater accountability and transparency in government spending.
