BSP helps 500 students open bank accounts

More than 500 young Filipino students in Southern Leyte opened their first bank accounts on Aug. 14, 2025 as part of the Youth Financial Inclusion (YFI) campaign, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Tuesday.

The initiative, which gathered over 1,100 students for an onboarding activity, was led by YFI ambassadors for the Visayas and took place during Southern Leyte State University’s (SLSU) general student assembly.

The YFI drive is a key initiative launched in January 2025 by the Financial Inclusion Steering Committee, which is chaired by the BSP. The campaign aims to improve financial health and access to services for Filipino youth.

Opening a transaction account is a gateway to broader financial services and opportunities, the BSP said. The YFI campaign is the first of its kind to be entirely organized and led by YFI Ambassadors.

YFI Ambassadors are student leaders from state universities and colleges who empower their peers through local initiatives and financial literacy efforts.

The initiative is supported by member agencies of the Financial Inclusion Steering Committee (FISC), including the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the Department of Finance – Bureau of the Treasury and the National Youth Commission. The Presidential Communications Office also provided support.
