DTI ramps up support for exporters as higher US tariffs take effect

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Thursday it is ramping up support programs to connect exporters with buyers, simplify customs procedures and provide access to VAT incentives through the CREATE MORE Act.

DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque issued the statement as the 19-percent reciprocal tariff imposed by the United States take effect this month.

Roque warned that the new tariff regime could weigh on export performance beginning August, following a double-digit growth in July.

She said exports showed resilience in July amid global challenges, but stressed the urgency of diversifying markets and broadening the country’s export base as new trade headwinds emerge.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that exports rose 17.3 percent year-on-year in July to more than $7.3 billion, led by strong shipments of electronics and mineral products.

This marked the seventh straight month of growth and reinforced the sector’s vital role in supporting the economy.

Roque said that from January to July, exports expanded by nearly 14 percent to $48.6 billion, reversing a decline seen in the latter part of 2024.

“The consistent rise in our exports, particularly in electronics and minerals, highlights the resilience of Filipino enterprises even in a challenging global trading environment,” Roque said.

“This surge is powered by strong international demand and the increasing competitiveness of Philippine industries,” she said.

Roque said that to cushion the 19 percent US tariff, the DTI is also strengthening small businesses’ competitiveness through nationwide learning sessions on packaging, marketing and international standards, while offering guidance on global certifications and compliance with labeling requirements.

Bianca Pearl Sykimte, director of the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB), said the DTI is actively guiding exporters to expand beyond traditional partners.

“Beyond our traditional partners, we are actively pursuing growth in Europe, ASEAN, and the Middle East,” she said.

“With targeted trade promotions, business-matching programs, and platforms like PHX Source and the FTA Integrated Portal, we are helping Filipino exporters seize opportunities in new markets,” said Sykimte.

he DTI is also investing in digital tools that provide real-time market insights, support online selling and enhance e-commerce capabilities. These tools are being used alongside trade missions and international fair participation across Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
