Nine in 10 in Metro Manila own smartphones, survey finds

About 90.6 percent of people in Metro Manila ages 10 and above own a smartphone, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The PSA’s 2024 National Information and Communications Technology Household Survey (NICTHS) found in the entire Philippines, about 98.8 percent of individuals ages 10 and older who use the internet use a cellphone, the most widely used device. Other devices include laptops (14.7 percent), smart TVs (11.3 percent) and desktops (10.0 percent).

Most internet users (76.9 percent) in the Philippines use it daily, spending an average of 4.6 hours a day online. Metro Manila residents have the highest average daily time online, at 6.1 hours, followed by CALABARZON at 5.3 hours and Western Visayas at 4.5 hours.

Making calls is the most common online activity (94.2 percent), followed by social networking and posting messages (87.3 percent), and streaming or downloading media (63.6 percent). The internet is least used for professional networking (4.4 percent), booking health appointments (5.4 percent), and job searching (6.6 percent).

PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, urged residents to use their smartphones to access the Digital National ID, a valid form of identification for various transactions, including civil registry requests.

“With many smartphone owners in NCR, more Filipinos can easily and conveniently access valid and sufficient proof of identity such as the Digital National ID,” Mapa said.

The Digital National ID can be accessed for free via the eGovPH app.
