Cyclone ‘Jacinto’ exits Philippines, heads to Vietnam

In an updated forecast on late Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) said tropical depression ‘Jacinto’ has already left the country after it was spotted at 505 kilometers west of Cubi Point in Subic Bay.

It was the 10th cyclone that entered the Philippine area of responsibility this year, which enhanced southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ rains, affecting weather conditions in the country.

‘Jacinto’ maintained its maximum sustained winds of 45 km per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph, moving north-northwestward at 10 kph, when it left the Philippine area of responsibility.

Neither a gale warning nor a tropical cyclone wind signal were hoisted throughout its stay in the country, but PAGASA cautioned of heavy downpour in affected areas due to enhanced ‘habagat’ rains.

Forecasters noted in earlier advisories that the cyclone is heading towards northern or central Vietnam, where it is likely to make a landfall by Saturday afternoon or evening (August 30). It is also expected to reach tropical storm category by Friday evening (August 29).
