Ninoy Aquino Day: Why It Still Matters to Gen Z

Every August 21, the Philippines commemorates Ninoy Aquino Day, honoring the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose assassination in 1983 ignited the Filipino people’s call for democracy. For many, his story belongs to history books. But for today’s Generation Z who never lived through martial law why should this day still matter?

To understand its relevance, we spoke with both students and teachers who shared their thoughts.

“Sometimes we forget that the freedom we enjoy today was paid for by people who dared to speak up,” said Angela, 18, a senior high school student. “Ninoy Aquino’s sacrifice reminds me that our voices matter, and silence in the face of wrong can be dangerous.”

For young people who grew up with social media and modern freedoms, connecting to history can feel distant but its lessons remain powerful.

Ryan, 20, a college student, reflected: “We usually think of holidays as just a rest day, but this one should mean more. Learning about Ninoy makes me realize that freedom isn’t automatic. It’s something people before us fought hard for, and we have to protect it.”

Teachers echo this importance, emphasizing how commemoration keeps memory alive.

“If we stop remembering heroes like Ninoy, the next generation risks taking democracy for granted,” explained Mr. Santos, a history teacher. “Ninoy’s death wasn’t just about one man; it was about Filipinos reclaiming their right to speak and be free.”

Ms. Reyes, a social science teacher, added: “Holidays like Ninoy Aquino Day are not just about looking back, but also looking forward. It asks the youth: how will you use your freedom? What kind of future will you build?”

For Gen Z, celebrating Ninoy Aquino Day isn’t just a history lesson it’s a challenge. It’s a reminder that courage, sacrifice, and love for country are timeless values, not bound by decades.

This holiday should not just be treated as another long weekend. For Gen Z, it’s a reminder that freedom comes with responsibility and each small act of speaking up, questioning wrongs, and choosing truth is already a way of keeping Ninoy’s legacy alive.
