The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) has condemned the Aug. 15 shooting in Manila that left two Japanese tourists dead, saying the incident threatens the country’s image as a safe travel destination.
Police reports said two Japanese nationals were shot on Friday in what is believed to be a robbery involving two men on a motorcycle. Two suspects were later arrested in connection with the incident based on security camera footage and witness accounts.
In a statement, the DOT extended its sympathies to the victims’ families and urged the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a swift and thorough investigation.
The DOT noted that recent incidents have already triggered travel advisories from foreign embassies in the Philippines’ top visitor markets, raising concerns about tourist confidence.
Tourism officials said they are working with regional offices, local governments, and industry stakeholders to strengthen security measures and reassure both foreign and domestic travelers.
The DOT said protecting lives and maintaining the country’s reputation as a premier global destination remain its top priorities.
