Record-setting Galaxy Manila Marathon highlights growing PH running scene

The Galaxy Manila Marathon more than lived up to its billing as the country’s premier running event, drawing an impressive 19,000 runners from 16 countries over the weekend at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds.

Organized by RUNRIO with Samsung as the title sponsor, the race showcased the depth and passion of the Philippine running community, from elite athletes to first-time marathoners.

About 3,000 runners braved the 42K full marathon, taking on a scenic yet demanding course that wound through major thoroughfares like Roxas Boulevard and Buendia Avenue, and passed iconic landmarks such as Rizal Park and the historic walled city of Intramuros.

Sanctioned by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, part of the World Athletics Rankings Competition, and certified by World Athletics, the race provided a true test of endurance, speed, and mental fortitude.

The 21K half-marathon set a national record with 7,000 participants — the largest turnout for a half-marathon in Philippine history.

Among the runners were familiar names in both sports and entertainment. Triathlete Nikko Huelgas joined the challenge alongside celebrities Rica Peralejo-Bonifacio, Ramon Bautista, and Bernadette Sembrano, all pushing themselves to the limit. Leisure runners also made their presence felt, including DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Jerald Napoles, and Tim Yap, who crossed the finish line to cheers from the crowd.

The event was more than just a race — it was a statement. Filipino runners are not only growing in number but also in ambition, hungry for more competitive opportunities on both the local and international stage.

With its record-breaking turnout and festive yet competitive atmosphere, the Galaxy Manila Marathon has cemented its place as the flagship running event in the Philippines and a rising star in Southeast Asia’s racing circuit. The bar has been set high, and the running community is already looking forward to an even bigger and more exciting edition next year.
