‘Tamaraw Cup’ added to 2026 GR Philippine Cup lineup
Fresh after the culmination of this year’s Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup, something new to anticipate is already in the pipeline as Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) officially announced the creation of the Tamaraw Cup for the 2026 season. The announcement was made by TMP’s First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations, Andy Ty, at a press conference held during the series’ final leg at the Clark International Speedway, Pampanga.
The announcement was preceded by a demo race featuring five track-prepped Toyota Tamaraws, which showcased the utility vehicle’s racing potential. The Tamaraw Cup will be the first racing series in the country’s rich motorsport history to feature a utility vehicle, intended to highlight the Tamaraw’s durability and versatility while providing a unique platform for grassroots racers.
The Tamaraw Cup race cars will be purpose-built vehicles, distinct from their commercial counterparts. Although performance specifications are yet to be disclosed, standard safety modifications such as roll cages, racing seats, and upgraded suspension will be a given.
With participating drivers yet to be named, TMP anticipates a grid of at least 20 identical Tamaraw race cars which will promote close competition and a level playing field for all drivers. The addition of the Tamaraw Cup to the GR Philippine Cup umbrella is expected to bring a new element of excitement and national pride in a sport that has very rarely – if not, never – seen Filipino-made machinery take center stage.
