CHENGDU, China — Filipina sambist Aislinn Agnes Yap captured the Philippines’ second bronze medal in the 2025 World Games after defeating Nicole Castro of Costa Rica in the women’s combat sambo -80 kg bronze-medal match.
The world No. 1 in her division secured a convincing 3-1 victory in her second and final bout of the tournament, reaffirming her place among the sport’s elite and earning a well-deserved podium finish.
Earlier in the day, Yap suffered a surprising 0-2 loss to Ulbossyn Adilova of Kazakhstan in the semifinals at the Jianyang Cultural and Sports Centre Gymnasium.
Adilova controlled the match from start to finish, neutralizing Yap’s takedown attempts and putting up a strong defensive wall when the Filipina shifted to striking.
Despite the setback, Yap bounced back with composure and determination to clinch a bronze medal for Team Philippines.
