‘Sunshine’ wins audience award at Estonia film festival

Critically acclaimed Filipino film “Sunshine,” starring Maris Racal, has earned another international accolade after winning the Tartuff Audience Award at the Tartuff (PÖFF Love Film Festival) in Estonia.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, production company Project 8 Projects announced the news on its Instagram. In a press release posted on the festival’s website, it also confirmed the win, noting that “the audience of Tartuff can appreciate the cinematography of exotic lands.”

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, “Sunshine” follows the story of a teenage gymnast who learns she is pregnant just before the Olympic trial competition, set in a country where abortion is illegal.

The coming-of-age drama has been making waves on the international film circuit. Just last month, it took home both the Narrative Feature Jury Award and the Narrative Feature Audience Award at the Austin Asian American Film Festival in Texas. In February, it won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.

The film has also been screened at the Palm Springs International Film Festival under the World Cinema Now section and was nominated for Best Youth Film at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
