Before major Philippine developers launched their own hotel brands, a homegrown group has carved out a prestigious niche in the highly-competitive hospitality sector over the past 25 years. It achieved this through award-winning hotels and resorts in some of the country’s most distinctive locations.
Discovery Hotels Corp. not only caught up with international chains, but also set benchmarks for accommodation in the Philippines, starting with its Pasig City property in 2000.
The company operates Discovery Suites in Ortigas, Discovery Primea in Makati, Discovery Shores Boracay, Club Paradise Palawan in Coron, Discovery Samal in Davao, Manami Resort in Sipalay, Negros Occidental and Kip&Kin, a new brand catering to a younger generation, with a groundbreaking property in Siargao.
Blessy Townes, vice president and head of digital marketing and branding at Discovery Hospitality, said the group became known for “Service That’s All Heart.”
“It came naturally to us. It wasn’t crafted in a boardroom. It was born from how guests have felt, seen, cared for and remembered. That emotional connection has always been the heart of our story,” Townes said.
“Ultimately, our standard is not just meeting expectations. It’s exceeding them in ways that feel personal and deeply Filipino,” she said.
“Prestige in hospitality isn’t just built through accolades; it’s built through consistency, emotional resonance and brand trust. Our brands—like Discovery Resorts, Discovery Primea, and Discovery Suites—have become benchmarks in their categories because of how guests feel when they’re there,” Townes said.
The group’s philosophy is to “automate the friction, but personalize the feeling,” Townes said. “We were the first hotel group in the Philippines to launch chatbot live chat in 2018, providing real-time support while still sounding human and generating brand love. We were first to explore the metaverse with ‘Bogart & Friends’ on Roblox in 2022, opening up Discovery to Gen Alpha in a playful, creative way,” she added.
“Filipino hospitality is built on genuine care, emotional intuition and a deep sense of generosity. These are qualities the world is increasingly seeking in an age of artificial intelligence and transactional service. More than a service style, it’s a cultural strength that resonates globally because it’s rooted in sincerity and connection,” she said.
Townes said Discovery has helped shape how this form of hospitality is interpreted, scaled and celebrated around the world.
“The Discovery group has operationalized warmth through brand signatures, service rituals and guest personalization strategies that are intuitive yet consistent across properties. The now-iconic hand-over-heart greeting, which started organically in our properties and is now the national ‘Mabuhay’ gesture, is just one example of how heartfelt service becomes brand DNA,” she said.
The group opened its first hotel, Discovery Suites, in 2000, becoming the country’s first all-suites business hotel. This was at a time when the market focused on short-stay corporate volume.
“We welcomed long-stay guests with space, warmth and a deep sense of home. It wasn’t about room count; it was about relationship-building,” Townes said.
A defining moment came in 2007 with the launch of Discovery Shores Boracay — now known as Discovery Boracay. As the first five-star resort in Station 1, it set a new benchmark for Filipino luxury beachfront hospitality.
Beyond the white sand and world-class design, the service truly stood out — heartfelt, personal and unforgettable, she said. That was where the group’s hand-over-heart greeting first came to life — a natural, instinctive gesture that would eventually be adopted by the Department of Tourism as the official “Mabuhay” greeting.
By 2013, the group established Discovery Hospitality to bring its growing portfolio of iconic properties under one management umbrella. This allowed the group to cultivate a stronger culture, scale its service DNA and ensure that “Service That’s All Heart” was more than a philosophy but a lived experience across all its hotels and resorts.
“Today, that same heart-led service continues to define us. It’s not just what we do — it’s who we are,” Townes said.
“Being a trailblazer in Filipino hospitality means we’ve never been content with just adopting industry norms; we set them,” she said.
“We use technology to amplify our values, not automate them. Every digital move we make is designed to strengthen relationships, drive excellence, and bring our ‘Service That’s All Heart’ to life in every channel,” Townes said.
Discovery Boracay (formerly Discovery Shores Boracay) and Discovery Coron (formerly Club Paradise Palawan)—now part of the Discovery Resorts brand, rebranded in 2024—have delivered immersive stays that connect guests to the soul of the destination.
At Discovery Coron (formerly Club Paradise Palawan), sustainability is integral to the guest journey. From reef conservation and wildlife education to zero-waste operations, guests are invited to actively participate in protecting the island they’ve come to enjoy.
This deep commitment has earned global recognition: the property was a 2nd place finalist at the 2020 Green Destinations Story Awards and received the prestigious 2024 ASEAN Green Hotel Award—a testament to its environmental stewardship and community engagement. At Discovery Coron, sustainability is something every guest can feel, join, and be proud of.
“As a homegrown Filipino brand, we’ve always had the insider’s edge. We know our destinations like the back of our hands not just geographically, but culturally and emotionally. Our storytelling is genuine. Our design reflects the soul of the surroundings. That’s what makes our experiences authentic, not templated,” she said.
The group expanded this philosophy through the launch of the Signature Collection, a portfolio of highly individual city and resort properties like Manami Resort, where regional identity, craftsmanship and cultural pride are at the forefront.
“To engage millennial and Gen Z travelers, we created Kip&Kin, a lifestyle hospitality brand built around creative expression, social connection and immersive play. ‘Kip’ is slang for sleep, while ‘Kin’ reflects chosen family and community. Together, the name embodies what the brand stands for: a welcoming space to rest, bond, and belong. It’s bold, curious, and community-led just like the new generation it’s built for,” Townes said.
“Our success comes from knowing that there’s no one-size-fits-all in hospitality. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter approaches. Every Discovery property is purpose-built and market-aligned—from the refined urban elegance of Filipino masterpiece Discovery Primea, to the comfort-first, long-stay model of Discovery Suites, to the immersive, beachside experiences of Discovery Resorts. We serve different guest segments, but all with the same philosophy: authenticity, personalization, and care,” she said.
“So whether it’s a business traveler in Ortigas, a honeymooner in Coron or a digital native staying with friends in a co-living space, they’re all getting Discovery’s signature care—personalized, not standardized,” she said.
“We’re not reacting to the demand for authenticity; as trailblazers, we’ve been leading it all along because at Discovery, local is legacy,” Townes said.
