Cagayan hospitals, coastal towns on high alert amid tsunami threat

Several hospitals in the coastal areas of Cagayan province on Wednesday have initiated preemptive evacuations due to a tsunami threat following a powerful earthquake in Russia.

Patients from the Ballesteros District Hospital were moved to the Cagayan Breeding Station, while hospitals in Aparri, Sta. Ana, and Gonzaga have begun preparations for possible evacuations.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Rebecca Battung has instructed hospital chiefs in at-risk areas to coordinate with their respective disaster response offices. Other hospitals across the province are also on alert.

In Buguey, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, has been monitoring coastal barangays.

The local Emergency Operations Center is fully activated, with rescue units and coordination lines with the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and maritime authorities ready for deployment.

Residents are urged to remain calm, stay informed, and follow official advisories.

Meanwhile, several towns in Cagayan have suspended classes and government work on Wednesday, July 30, including Aparri, Abulug, Calayan, and Gonzaga. Partial class and work suspensions were also declared in Ballesteros, Pamplona, Santa Ana, Sanchez Mira, and Santa Teresita.
