Local government units play a pivotal role in safeguarding the country’s natural wealth for future generations.
They are at the forefront of building resilient and sustainable communities in the face of rapid urbanization, climate change and social and economic challenges.
Among their responsibilities is ensuring the conservation of natural resources, and securing sustainable financing for environmental protection that contribute to accelerating climate action and strengthening disaster resilience―key pillars in the Philippine Development Plan.
While national governments set broad agendas, LGUs can drive innovation and tailor solutions to their specific needs.
The Local Government Code of 1991 or RA 7160 empowers LGUs to have meaningful autonomy. It provides fiscal powers and authority to government officials to propose, appropriate, and release funds to agencies, office programs and projects.
