The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Philippines recently held the 3rd Refugee Film Festival at San Beda University-Manila, celebrating youth-led films that explored the theme “Strengthening Spaces of Resilience and Hope.”
From 39 nationwide entries, Sa Simula ng Wala by Daghili Pictures (University of Makati) won first prize. Wala’y Dagat Dinhi by Pelikulang Daluyong (Laguna University) came in second, while Akong Paboritong Pastil by Duwende Films (Davao) placed third.
The winning short documentary follows the journey of an undocumented adult foundling in the Philippines, exploring identity and legal belonging. Other films tackled the struggles of internally displaced persons and cultural resilience in the face of displacement.
The festival also screened We Dare to Dream, a documentary on refugee Olympic athletes, and Peace by Chocolate, based on the true story of a Syrian family rebuilding their life in Canada. Post-screening talkbacks featured refugees, professors, and advocates.
Judges included UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Atom Araullo, filmmaker Ditsi Carolino, DOJ officials, and San Beda faculty. The event was held in celebration of World Refugee Day, in partnership with Pathways Pilipinas, DOJ-RSPPU, Uniqlo Philippines, and others.
