PCG rules out oil spill over Lian sea mishap

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has ruled out the likelihood of seawater pollution arising from a sunken fishing vessel off Barangay Luyahan, Lian, Batangas.

Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto echoed the same confidence that no oil spill would arise over the sea mishap involving the fishing vessel that capsized last Wednesday amid rough seas and heavy rains spawned by tropical storms and the southwest monsoon or habagat.

The ill-fated fishing vessel marked Unity World was reportedly carrying 40,000 liters of automotive fuel with an 11-man crew enroute to Cuyo, Palawan from Navotas City when tragedy struck.

Region 4A chief Commo. Geronimo Tuvilla vowed to speed up salvage of the ship as the weather improved. “We assure the province and the good governor that the coast guard is on top of the situation. The fuel on board is marine diesel oil, meaning it is not heavy fuel,” Tuvilla said.
