SFHC offers payment moratorium to 148,000 storm-hit housing borrowers

More than 148,000 families severely impacted by Tropical Storm Crising and the southwest monsoon (habagat) will benefit from a one-month moratorium on monthly amortization payments, the Social Housing Finance Corp. (SHFC) said Friday.

The moratorium, which provides a pause in payments for homes and livelihoods, comes in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for swift assistance to calamity-affected families. It also aligns with the instruction of Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling to extend immediate support to impacted communities.

“This is more than just a pause in payments,” SHFC president and chief executive Federico Laxa said.

“This is a compassionate response anchored in our commitment to assist our communities during times of disasters,” he said.

Laxa said the agency mobilized its regional offices to closely monitor the situation on the ground, ensuring timely assistance reaches the most affected areas.

The moratorium will provide financial relief to families from over 2,100 communities in areas hit by the recent weather disturbances, enabling them to redirect resources toward basic needs and immediate recovery efforts.

Among the most affected communities are Metro Manila, with about 70,000 member-beneficiaries, Quezon Province, with nearly 12,000, and Cavite, with around 11,000. Other severely affected areas include Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, Laguna, Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Sorsogon, Iloilo and Palawan.

The SHFC cited its role as “Kaagapay ng Komunidad” (Community Partner)—a reliable partner in building safe, affordable, and resilient housing communities.

It advised affected member-beneficiaries to coordinate with their account officers or contact the nearest SHFC office for further information.
