Massive floods engulf Metro Manila cities—MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday reported massive flooding in at least 14 cities brought by continuous southwest monsoon (habagat) rains in the National Capital Region.

Heavy downpour caused chest-deep flooding in Barangay Marulas and waist-deep flooding in Barangays Malanday and Dalandanan, all in Valenzuela City, which were declared not passable to all types of vehicles.

Massive waist-deep flooding was also experienced in low-lying areas at Green Heights in Sucat, Paranaque City; Del Pilar in Barangay Maysilo in Malabon City; areas of G. Araneta and NS Amoranto in Quezon City, and Mulawin Street in Barangay 182 and Barangay 180 in Pasay City.

Knee-deep flooding also affected residents and business establishments along Espana Boulevard near Dela Fuente Street, Antipolo Street, and Lacson Street; Palanca Street near Quinta Market in Quiapo; Ayala Boulevard; Liwasang Bonifacio; and Esplanade Tunnel going to Intramuros, all in Manila; areas of G. Araneta Kaliraya and Biak na Bato in Quezon City; Alabang Zapote Road and Zapote Junction in Muntinlupa City; M. H. Del Pilar Gov Pascual, and Rizal Avenue Extension near City Hall in Malabon City; and Circumferential Road – 3 NLEX Connector in Caloocan City.

Also in Manila, the MMDA reported gutter-deep flooding that caused slow-moving vehicles along Taft Avenue, Recto Avenue, Quirino Avenue, P. Ocampo Street, Tayuman, Rizal Avenue, Jose Abad Santos, United Nations Avenue, Pedro Gil Street, Kalaw Street, and Roxas Boulevard.

Gutter-deep flooding also affected residents in Marcos Alvarez near Wonderland Subdivision, Talon Singko, and Alabang-Zapote Road in Las Pinas City, while above gutter-deep flooding was reported on both south and northbound lanes of EDSA Shaw Tunnel in Mandaluyong City; J. Vargas and C5 Eagle Streets in Pasig City.

Residents of Muntinlupa City encountered half-tire deep flooding along National Road in front of City Hall in Barangay Putatan, which was declared not passable to light vehicles.

Also affected by flooding were Barangays Mabini, New Zaniga, Poblacion, and Daang Bakal, all in Mandaluyong City; Osmeña Emilia in Makati City; areas of SM City going to FVR Road and Major Dizon in Marikina City; and Rotunda and EDSA near Heritage Hotel in Pasay City.

As of 12 noon Tuesday, July 22, Metro Manila is under the Orange Heavy Rainfall Warning, which means flooding is threatening, most likely in flood-prone areas.
