Seven celebrated figures in Philippine cinema were honored with the Movie Icon award at the 8th Entertainment Editors’ Choice (EDDYS) on Sunday night.
The EDDYS paid tribute to industry legends Laurice Guillen, Odette Khan, Perla Bautista, Pen Medina, Rosemarie Gil and Eddie Mesa, and National Artist Kidlat Tahimik who received the Movie Icon award for their body of work in Philippine cinema.
Guillen, who marks over five decades in the industry, reflected on her journey, saying, “More than 50 years ago, anyone entering this profession always had a connection with the press, now called media. After 50 years, we have become friends. That’s what happens in lasting relationships.”
Khan spoke about the craft of acting, saying, “We worked hard to get where we are now—with our hearts and souls. It’s not easy to convince people to cry or to get angry.”
Tahimik, regarded as the “Father of Philippine Independent Cinema,” highlighted the value of staying connected to one’s roots.
“Even if we appear westernized on the outside, deep down we are always connected to our culture,” he said. “There are many indie filmmakers today carrying that spirit.”
Medina thanked the organizers, saying, “Thank you to the EDDYS and SPEEd for recognizing those of us who are no longer young but are still here, still standing.”
The EDDYS, organized by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd), celebrates both veteran artists and the year’s standout films.
