The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public against the health risks of swimming in floodwaters amid persistent heavy rains in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.
The advisory comes after viral videos showed children diving and playing in flooded streets during the ongoing downpour.
Health Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said during a Bagong Pilipinas briefing that floodwaters could be contaminated with rat urine, which poses the risk of leptospirosis.
He stressed that exposure to leptospira bacteria through open wounds, eyes, nose, or mouth can lead to serious illness.
Domingo urged the public to stay indoors and avoid engaging in any activity that involves contact with floodwater.
Those who stepped into floodwaters are advised to apply waterproof bandages on wounds and seek medical attention at the nearest health center.
Free consultations and medications for leptospirosis are available at local health units.
