Ilocos Sur reports P17-m infrastructure damage due to ‘Crising’

The Ilocos Sur provincial government said it incurred a total of P17-million in infrastructure damage in the wake of severe tropical storm ‘Crising,’ known outside the Philippines as ‘Wipha.’

“The damaged infrastructure includes a slope protection of a day care center in Barangay (village) Lubang in Cervantes town, farm-to-market road, a hospital facility and flood control projects,” the Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported on Monday.

At least nine houses sustained partial damage.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in partnership with local government units across the province brought aid to about 2,115 families or 6,718 individuals who were affected by the recent storm. Relief items include family food packs, hygiene and sleeping kits.

The Provincial Health Office, likewise, provided medical services and medicines.

Despite Crising’s exit, the state weather bureau on Monday advised local disaster risk reduction and management councils to take appropriate actions as flash floods and landslides are possible due to heavy rains from the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Areas affected in particular include lower Abra, Silay-Sta. Maria, Buaya, and Amburayan.

To address flooding in Barangay Fuerte, Caoayan town, a heavy equipment has dug a waterway from the river leading to the West Philippine Sea to allow floodwaters recede more quickly.
