DUISBURG, Germany—The Mapúa University Cardinals make their highly anticipated debut on Saturday as action in the 2025 FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany went full blast.
Fresh off their historic NCAA Season 100 championship, the Cardinals are ready to test their mettle against some of the best collegiate basketball programs worldwide, beginning with a formidable challenge against Brazil at the Walter-Schädlich-Halle in Duisburg.
The reigning NCAA champions secured their berth in the Universiade after winning the Asian University Basketball Championships — organized by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines, the official university sports body recognized by the International University Sports Federation.
The Cardinals, who will be led by MVP Clint Escamis, are bracketed with the Czech Republic and Poland at Group C.
A perennial powerhouse in international basketball, Brazil presents a significant opening challenge for the Filipino cagers.
While specific details about Brazil’s university roster for this tournament are yet to fully emerge, their national basketball programs consistently produce top-tier talent, and their university teams are known for their athleticism, skill, and disciplined play.
Held from July 16 to July 27, 2025, across the Rhine-Ruhr region and Berlin, the Universiade sees the Philippines also competing in volleyball, table tennis, archery, athletics, artistic gymnastics and badminton.
