The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in coordination with the city government of Manila, opened on Wednesday a floodgate and installed trash traps in Manila Bay to ease flooding this rainy season, especially along Roxas Boulevard and the Malate area.
In a press briefing, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said they have installed a trash trap in the water channel at Manila Yacht Club to collect the garbage that will flow out of Manila Bay.
He added that two more drainages, including the one at Remedios, can also be opened if the city’s flooding worsens.
For his part, Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso shared the opening of floodgate is expected to alleviate severe flooding in the areas of Malate, Ermita, San Andres, and Paco.

Among the streets that will benefit from the flow of water from Estero de Abad includes Pablo Ocampo or Vito Cruz, Taft Avenue, Roxas Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue.
Domagoso explained that the sewage treatment facility at Roxas Boulevard is a great help, but because it is small, water accumulates and causes flooding.
He emphasized that the initiative shall reduce the overflow of water in Manila canals caused by garbage coming from Dolomite Beach.
Domagoso is also urging residents to be active in practicing the proper disposal of garbage to reduce flooding in the city.
