Power rates in spot market declined in June on lower demand, says IEMOP

The average system-wide power rates in the Philippines’ spot market declined 3.9 percent in June 2025 on lower demand and supply, the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) said Thursday.

IEMOP data showed that the average system-wide rates at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) fell by P0.16 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to P3.86 /kWh from P4.01 /kWh for the period of May 26 to June 25, 2025.

Both system-wide supply and demand decreased during the period, by 3.5 percent and 4.1 percent respectively, according to IEMOP, which operates the WESM.

System-wide available supply reached 21,432 megawatts (MW), down from 22,218 MW in May. Demand reached 14,545 MW, down from 15,169 MW.

Average electricity prices in Luzon followed the system-wide trend, dropping 7.5 percent to P3.91/kWh from P4.23 in the previous month.

Luzon’s available supply declined 3.5 percent to 15,076 MW, while demand also went down 5.4 percent to 10,400 MW.

The Visayas and Mindanao grids saw rates increase by 4.3 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively.

The average WESM rates in the Visayas rose to P3.93 /kWh from P3.91 while Mindanao’s rates also increased to P3.54 from P3.11.

Both regions reported a slight decline in available supply, with the Visayas posting a 1.1-percent drop to 2,635 MW and Mindanao a 5.4-percent decrease to 3,721 MW.
