DOJ evaluates new state witnesses in ‘missing sabungeros’ case

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has yet to decide if four self-confessed accomplices of alias ‘Totoy’ can qualify as state witnesses in the “missing sabungeros” case, and thus, be entitled to government protection.

“There is yet no basis for them to be State Witnesses until they are charged in the case. A person can be discharged as a state witness if they help the state by testifying truthfully against others involved in a crime, and the court agrees that their evidence is important and necessary,” said Justice spokesperson Mico Clavano.

Further, he explained that the credibility of the witness and the weight of their testimony will still have to be evaluated.

He added that they can show sincerity by offering object evidence as well in support of their testimony.

In a live video posted online, the accomplices appealed protection to the government claiming they were also victims.
