Young Yulo leads 22 Olympic scholars

YOUNG gymnast Karl Eldrew Yulo is one of 22 athletes given scholarship grants by the International Olympic Committee.

The 16-year-old Yulo, who recently earned a silver medal in the vault event at the 2025 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Junior Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea, will get to receive a monthly allowance of $1,000 through the Olympic Solidarity program. Yulo is younger brother of Paris Olympic’ double-gold medalist Carlos Yulo.

The Philippine Olympic Committee, headed by its president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, will get financial assistance in his preparations and participation for international meets that will serve as qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Nine Filipino athletes will get this support from the IOC, including Chino Sy Tancontian (judo), John Cabang Tolentino (athletics) and Noelito Jose Jr. (fencing) in the men’s side.

Getting their stipends in the women’s side are Mazel Alegado (skateboarding) Aliah Rose Gavalez (wrestling), Bianca Pagdanganan (golf) and  Shagne Yaoyao (cycling – mountainbiking).

Getting a monthly scholarship of $1,500  for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games are Peter Joseph Groseclose (short track speed skating) and Francis Ceccarelli (alpine skiing).

An annual budget of $25,000.00 has been granted to the campaigns of the Philippine national men’s curling team and the Philippine national women’s beach volleyball squad.

Twelve continental athletes will get an annual support of $2,083.33 per year, namely Ojay Fuentes (canoe-kayak), women’s grandmaster Janelle Frayna (chess), Janus Ercilla (canoe kayak), Sakura Alforte (karatedo), GM Danielle Quizon (chess), Rebecca Cyril (karatedo), Kira Ellis (triathlon), Annie Ramirez (jiujitsu), Jansen  Pareja (Kickboxing), Tachiana Mangin (taekwondo) and Kylie Mallari (muay thai).

The aim of Olympic Solidarity is to provide assistance to all National Olympic Committees for athlete development programs, in particular those with the greatest need for it.

This assistance is achieved through multi-faceted programmes that prioritize athlete development, train coaches and sports administrators, and promote the Olympic values.
