Ex-radio anchor shot dead in General Santos City

A former radio anchor died Monday after he was shot by unidentified assailants in Barangay Lagao, General Santos City.

The victim was shot at an establishment along Calina Street at around 7 a.m. He was declared dead before making it to the hospital, according to reports.

The Lagao Police Station was looking into CCTV footage that reportedly showed two motorcycle-riding individuals leaving the scene following the attack.

The victim was also a former activist and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said earlier in May that as of 2022, a total of 177 cases of attacks against media workers have been logged.

This number is 42 cases higher than last year’s count, based on data from NUJP and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility.

Among the recorded attacks under the current regime are six killings, 58 instances of harassment and 29 incidents of red-tagging against media professionals.

The organization has since then condemned the recent killings of veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang at his home in Kalibo, Aklan.
