Iloilo upgrades public roads, pushes clean energy to boost growth

ILOILO—The provincial government of Iloilo is taking significant strides in economic development and sustainability, with recent achievements in both road infrastructure and renewable energy training aimed at improving connectivity and promoting clean energy adoption.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office has completed six major road improvement projects in Northern Central Iloilo, enhancing transportation and boosting local commerce.

These projects, amounting to over ₱64 million, include the ₱22.5 million Barotac Nuevo-Dumangas-Dacutan Wharf Road, the ₱9.2 million Banga Bante-Barotac Nuevo Road widening, and the ₱14.7 million Sinandigan-Bugtong, Ilajas-Agtatacay, and Nani Moroboro roads in Dingle.

Additionally, the ₱17.6 million concreting and slope protection project on Jalaur Proper Lateral G Service Road in Pototan ensures safer and more efficient travel for motorists.

DPWH-Western Visayas Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel emphasized that these road upgrades reflect the agency’s commitment to preventing road accidents and facilitating economic progress through better infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Iloilo’s commitment to sustainability was reinforced through the “RENEWABLE ENERGY 101” training aimed at accelerating local clean energy adoption.

The program equipped local government units (LGUs) and students with vital knowledge on renewable energy (RE) technologies, policies, and funding sources.

The training gathered LGU representatives from Iloilo’s 4th and 5th districts with students interested in sustainable energy careers. Leaders were urged to integrate RE projects into development plans, highlighting clean energy’s role in economic growth and environmental protection.

Experts led technical discussions on RE fundamentals, funding opportunities, and Iloilo’s ongoing clean energy initiatives, encouraging LGUs to adopt projects that reduce fossil fuel dependence, improve energy security, and lower electricity costs.

For students, the program serves as an entry point into the clean energy sector, fostering a new generation of sustainability professionals.
