College of St. Benilde did everything right as it got back at Arellano University with a lopsided 100-77 victory yesterday that solidified its place on top in NCAA Season 100 at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

Gab Cometa had a shooting clinic, delivering a career 23-point performance, while Justine Sanchez was all over place with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists as the Blazers stayed immovable at No. 1 with a 9-2 record, or a full game ahead of No. 2 Mapua (8-3).

It also helped that the Blazers threw the defensive anvil on the Chiefs while minimizing their turnovers to just 11 after committing 28 the last time they played each other that resulted in a heartbreaking 73-71 defeat last Oct. 4.

“We made sure we took care of the ball, defended well and Gab Cometa and Justine Sanchez were great,” said an impressed CSB coach Charles Tiu. “It was a pretty good game for us.”

Unlike in their first encounter, the Blazers didn’t leave anything to chance and, after the Chiefs scored the first bucket, took charge from there and unleashed a series of blistering runs that saw the former blow the game out of reach.

So dominating was CSB that it’s biggest lead was a more than a month, 88-54, early in the final period.

For Cometa, it was all about following the system.

“Para sa akin, stick pa rin sa sistema, tiwala sa isa’t isa and go hard lang,” said the Cebu native.

AU stumbled to 3-8.
