Opportunities can be as fleeting as they are coveted, but for Mariane “Trigun” Mariano, the moment she has been waiting for is finally here.
The 36-year-old veteran from Tuba, Benguet makes her highly anticipated debut under the bright lights at ONE Friday Fights 83, scheduled for October 18 at the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
On the event’s supporting card, she is set to take on Japan’s Norika Ryu in a three-round strawweight MMA tiff
“When I came back to sports, the only thing that was missing on my resume was MMA. When I started off in the local circuit, I got a few good wins. I thought that I was just gonna be staying there but I thought to myself, I want to experience competing internationally, in a bigger arena,” Mariano said.
“So I prayed for it. I’m thinking with my age, I might not make it there. But I’m grateful to be given an opportunity to compete here. I’m thankful to my management and my manager who really pushed me to compete.”
Mariano’s journey in combat sports is both inspiring and impressive. She first made waves as a member of the Philippine national wushu team, where she showcased her talent by winning two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games.
She expanded her martial arts repertoire by training in various disciplines, including combat sambo and Bokator.
Her commitment to continuous improvement was evident when she made her SEA Games return in 2023, claiming a silver medal in Bokator.
Transitioning into the all-encompassing sport, “Trigun” has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. She holds an undefeated MMA record of 3-0, with two of her victories coming by way of submission.
Mariano’s most notable win to date came in April 2023 when she prevailed over Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres via unanimous decision in a bout that took place outside of ONE Championship.
“With my experience, it helps me build my confidence when it comes inside the arena,” she added.
“I’m sure I’m facing a very good fighter. I’m not underestimating the kid but I feel like my experience will make her realize that this ‘oldie’ in front of her still got it.”
Her upcoming assignment presents a unique challenge. At 30 years old, Ryu boasts a perfect 2-0 standing, as well as a 100-percent finishing rate.
The stakes are high for Mariano, as a victory over Ryu could propel her into contention for a $100,000 contract and a coveted spot on the ONE main roster.
