Batanes still under Signal No. 1 as ‘Julian’ continues to weaken

PAGASA lifted all tropical cyclone wind signals except for Batanes on Thursday as Typhoon ‘Julian’ continues to weaken while slowly moving northeastward towards Taiwan.

‘Julian’ is forecast to make landfall over southwestern Taiwan this morning or afternoon after entering the northwestern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to the state weather bureau.

“Despite its re-entry in the PAR region, no direct effect is anticipated over the country except for Batanes, which is relatively close to Taiwan,” PAGASA noted further in its weather advisory issued at 5:00 AM.

Based on last monitoring, the eye of the storm was estimated at 265 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes. It had maximum sustained winds of 140 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h. It is forecast to keep hovering on that area until Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, parts of Batanes and Abra continue to experience partial power interruptions in light of the storm’s effects on crucial electricity infrastructure.

According to the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the electric cooperatives in charge of power distribution in both provinces reported initial cost of damage worth P856,035.63 as of Wednesday, October 2.
