Blazers try to fortify hold on NCAA lead

COLLEGE of St. Benilde tries to keep its hold on the solo lead as it clashes with a slumping San Sebastian College even as Letran and San Beda renew their bitter rivalry today in NCAA Season 100 at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

Barely clinging to the top spot with a 5-1 record, the Blazers could extend their stay there if they could subdue the Stags, who have gone free-falling from the top down to the bottom after winning their first two outings and dropping their last five games, in their 11 a.m. duel.

Except for one complete loss of focus in a forgettable 71-69 defeat to Letran two weeks back, CSB has been nothing short of dominating as they kept its iron grip of No. 1 with a 5-1 record after a 103-78 stamping of Lyceum of the Philippines U Friday.

Expect the Blazers to draw strength anew from Allen Liwag, who bulldozed his way to 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Justine Sanchez, who was pristine after making all his five shots from the field and eight from the foul line to finish with 18 points the last time out.

Trying to catch up at CSB is Letran, which is currently at joint second with Mapua on 5-2 cards and could close in even further if it could hurdle an age-old nemesis—defending champion San Beda—at 2:30 p.m.

The Knights have kept its title chase going after they survived the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 82-73, in triple overtime Saturday.

But they would need to handle the Lions, who have gone from predators to preys after splitting their first six assignments including a heartbreaking 72-70 setback to the Arellano U Chiefs Saturday.

Meanwhile, the league announced that it has moved its Oct. 6 games pitting CSB with JRU and SSC-R with EAC from the Filoil EcoOil Arena to Oct. 8 at the MOA Arena, which will have a triple-header that will include a duel between San Beda and Mapua.
