Pirates edge Chiefs in overtime, 90-86

LYCEUM of the Philippines University rode on the overtime heroics of Mclaude Guadana and John Barba as it rallied to beat Arellano University, 90-86, on Friday to snare its second straight victory in NCAA Season 100 at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

Barba led the way with 25 points while Guadana scattered 12 but their presence was felt more in OT where they accounted for all of their team’s 11 points there as the Pirates improved to 2-2.

Gyle Montano was also heroic with his 17 points, including a big three-pointer late in regulation that helped force extra time.

It was another heartbreaker for the Chico Manabat-coached Chiefs, who appeared in control late but eventually lost their nerves and missed out on ending its winless start.

It was AU’s second defeat in two games that went the extra period and fourth overall in as many outings.

It didn’t help that the Chiefs bungled 13 of the 23 foul shots they took, including some in the clutch when they could have put the marauding Pirates away.

In contrast, LPU showed nerves of steel and didn’t panic in crunch time to pull off the massive fightback from 11 points down late in the third quarter, 63-52.
