Rising to their coach’s challenge, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws rebounded from a third-set stumble, overpowering an undermanned National University squad to claim a 25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16 victory in the semifinals of the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge at the Philsports Arena on Wednesday.
After back-to-back errors in the third set prevented them from sweeping the match, FEU captain Jelord Talisayan delivered a crucial spike to seal the one-hour-and-47-minute triumph, giving the Tamaraws the headstart in their best-of-three series, putting them in prime position to close it out on Sunday and advance to the championship round.
Head coach Edison Orcullo credited his team’s improved morale and composure for their strong finish.
“Kailangan lang maitaas uli ‘yung morale kasi mataas ang errors namin kanina. Pero bumalik naman ‘yung composure nu’ng mga players,” said Orcullo.
His words struck home, as the Tamaraws flexed their dominance in the fourth set, pulling away from the Bulldogs to take the win.
“Siguro, ginusto lang talaga nila manalo at makuha itong fourth set para maselyo na ang Game 1. Importante talaga ang unang laro,” added Orcullo, emphasizing the crucial nature of the series opener.
FEU now aims to wrap up the semis with a Game 2 victory this Sunday at 5 p.m., also at Philsports.
The Tams started slowly in the first set, trailing early before Talisayan and Dryx Saavedra ignited a comeback. Lirick Mendoza also made his mark late in the set, helping deny Leo Aringo’s attack with FEU’s lone block, which shifted the momentum in the Tamaraws’ favor.
Capitalizing on NU’s errors, the Tamaraws seized control in the second frame, widening the gap to secure a commanding 2-0 set lead.
However, NU came alive in the third set, showcasing its formidable net defense by piling up blocks and forcing Talisayan into multiple errors. The Bulldogs clawed their way to win the set and extend the match.
But that was all the Bulldogs could muster. FEU regrouped in the fourth, and with Talisayan’s continued attacking prowess, the Tamaraws clinch the set and the match with a strong finish.
Talisayan tallied 20 attack points, leading to an impressive 21-point outing, while Saavedra provided strong support with 14 points, all coming from attacks. Veteran setter Benny Martinez played a pivotal role in steering the offense, registering 20 excellent sets and adding two points.
Jan Abanilla, who had been instrumental in NU’s earlier win against De La Salle University, finished with 16 points on 12 attacks, three blocks, and one ace, while Mac Bandola and Leo Aringo also chipped in with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs sorely missed the presence of head coach Dante Alinsunurin and key players such as Buds Buddin, Jade Disquitado, Peng Taguibolos, and Choi Diao, who are currently training in Italy with the Alas Pilipinas Men’s national team.
