Leading consumer product company steps up fight against plastic waste with a new grant opportunity

Unilever is stepping up its commitment to plastic sustainability in the Philippines by launching a grant opportunity to combat plastic waste.

This is an initiative of the CIRCLE Alliance, a collaboration with USAID and EY, which aims to support innovations in plastic waste collection, processing, and recycling, particularly focusing on reducing the use of virgin plastics and finding solutions for hard-to-recycle flexible plastic packaging.

The CIRCLE Alliance seeks to accelerate the development of circular economies, thereby empowering women, improving livelihoods, and protecting the environment.

It will provide grant funding and tailored business support to scale impactful, market-based solutions, particularly focusing on small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs who may currently lack the resources to operate at the needed scale.

Unilever’s chief sustainability officer Rebecca Marmot emphasized the initiative will help “scale both new and existing solutions for packaging circularity.”

The leading consumer product manufacturer believes that the CIRCLE Alliance will have a meaningful impact, fostering emerging circular solutions and recognizing the socioeconomic importance of the plastics value chain.

CIRCLE Philippines and SEA sustainability lead Rondell Torres highlighted the growing momentum for collaborations to address plastic waste and create a fair and equitable circular economy for plastics in the region.

Enterprises can apply for the grant until October 4, 2024.
