Liam Neeson takes on the lead role in the Irish action-thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Known for his action-packed roles in recent years, Neeson portrays Finbar Murphy, a retired hitman seeking peace in a coastal Irish village. His quiet life is disrupted when a group of terrorists, led by Doirean (Kerry Condon), arrives, forcing him back into a violent past.
Set in 1970s Ireland during the Troubles, the film intertwines themes of violence, redemption, and patriotism. The cast includes Jack Gleeson, recognized for his role as Joffrey in Game of Thrones, who plays a young hitman looking up to Neeson’s character.
In the Land of Saints and Sinners goes beyond its action sequences, offering a nuanced portrayal of Ireland’s history. Neeson shared with The Hollywood Reporter his memories of the Troubles.
“It was a very nasty, horrible time for everybody… It’s interesting to do a film like this, which is entertainment, yet based on a reality that happened,” he says.
In the Land of Saints and Sinners, premieres on Lionsgate Play on September 13 via PLDT Home and Smart.
