A fork in the road: Take your pick

This October, automotive enthusiasts will be treated to two significant motor shows, both opening their doors on the same day (October 24th), and just a stone’s throw away. The 9th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) will take place at the World Trade Center, while the 12th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) will be hosted at the SMX Convention Center, both in Pasay City.

The question on many minds is: which event will draw the larger crowd? The Philippine automotive landscape is currently in a state of transformation, with a surge of electric vehicles (EVs) from China challenging the long-standing dominance of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, primarily from Japanese manufacturers.

Both shows recently held press conferences to generate excitement. PIMS, boasting support from 17 car manufacturers, including the undisputed leader Toyota, promises to showcase a mix of ICE and hybrid models. In contrast, PEVS is heavily backed by EV pioneers, led by the world’s top EV manufacturer, BYD.

These events are expected to catalyze the local automotive market, especially as the government ramps up its support for electrification. Participating manufacturers at PIMS are eager to unveil their latest innovations, with a strong emphasis on hybrids that combine gasoline and battery power—viewed by many as a bridge toward a sustainable future.

Meanwhile, PEVS will highlight the rapid advancements in EV technowlogy, fueled by private sector initiatives and government backing. The Department of Energy has already registered hundreds of electric and hybrid vehicles on local roads, while the number of charging stations has skyrocketed from 170 to 636 in just eight months.

As these two major events approach, one must ponder: if given the chance, which show will you prioritize? The traditional allure of PIMS or the pioneering spirit of PEVS?
