‘Serious misrepresentation’: Japan slams China statement on SCS

The Japan Embassy in the Philippines has issued a statement criticizing China’s recent statements and actions regarding the South China Sea.

“The issue with regard to the South China Sea is directly related to the peace and stability of the region and is a legitimate concern of the international community,” the Embassy said.

“As a stakeholder that makes use of the South China Sea, the issue is also an important matter of interest for Japan, which depends on sea transport for most of its resources and energy,” it added.

On August 29, the Chinese side announced it filed a diplomatic protest against the Japan Ambassador to the Philippines on its remarks of support for the Philippines in the South China Sea.

“The peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region are hard-earned and need to be cherished and protected by regional countries. China firmly safeguards its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and remains committed to properly handling maritime disputes with the Philippines through dialogue and consultation,” the Chinese spokesperson said.

In response, Japan pointed out the international community’s unified stance against China’s repeated aggressive actions, including the use of flares and water cannons against Philippine vessels.

These actions, Japan argued, not only violate the freedom of navigation and overflight as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) but also represent a unilateral attempt “to change the status quo by force or coercion.”
