General Trias City, Cavite—Cavite Provincial Governor Juanito Victor ‘Jonvic’ Remulla, Jr. announced that seafoods in the province, including mussels and other types of shellfish, are safe to eat, according to his social media page on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
“For everyone’s information. According to Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. of the Department of Agriculture, it is now free to catch and sell mussels and clams from Cavite,” Remulla said in Tagalog on his Facebook post.
The governor announced this positive development after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conducted two confirmatory tests and determined that mussels from the waters of Cavite are free of any toxic substances.
“Mga bro, pwede na ulit pulutan ang tahong-chips-ahoy (Dudes, we can snack on mussel chips again),” Remulla said in jest.
With this announcement, Cavite vendors are free to resume selling mussels and other shellfish in the public markets.
It is expected that the vitality of the seafood market in the province will be restored, as mentioned by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. during his visit to the province last Wednesday at the General Trias Sports Park to lead the government’s aid distribution to 32,392 fisherfolks and seafood vendors.
Cavite earlier imposed a fish and seafood ban on its coastal waters after an oil spill incident due to a sunken motor tanker vessel in Bataan on July 24, 2024, which disrupted the livelihood of fishermen and everyone relying on the fishing industry in the province.
