Trece Martires, Cavite—Fish products caught in the waters of Cavite are now safe to buy and eat, according to Governor Juanito Victor ‘Jonvic’ Remulla, who made the announcement on Thursday in his latest social media posts.
This comes after almost a month of imposing a fishing ban in the coastal waters of the province following a massive oil spill from the sunken motor tanker (MT) Terranova in Limay, Bataan.
Remulla, meanwhile, clarified that only the fish are safe to eat. Other seafood products or shellfish such as clams (halaan), mussels (tahong), and oysters (talaba) are still going through further testing.
The Cavite governor made the announcement after receiving confirmation from Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) previously cleared the fish products caught in the provinces of Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan and the National Capital Region (NCR) on August 13, 2024.
Remulla also said in his Facebook post that the total damage to fishermen, seafood vendors and those who make a living related to fishing have reached more than P1-billion.
He also appealed to the management of MT Terranova and its owners to show some concern for his countrymen, whose livelihoods were severely impacted because of their negligence.
