Two reigning queens of the Miss Philippines organization lent their support to this year’s celebration of National Aspin Day, spearheaded by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a volunteer-based NGO aiming to prevent animal cruelty through education.
Miss Supranational Philippines 2025 Tarah Valencia and Miss Charm Philippines 2025 Cyrille Payumo, both animal lovers, will join the activities for the 4th National Aspin Day on Aug. 18, to be held at the Rain Garden of Ayala Malls Vertis North in Quezon City.
The annual celebration of National Aspin Day was launched by PAWS in 2021, with the objective of promoting love and better treatment for the Philippines’ native dog, the Asong Pinoy or Aspin, previously known as askals or asong kalye.
PAWS has worked over the years to change Filipinos’ minds and hearts about aspins.
“People found it acceptable to just leave their native dogs on the streets to fend for themselves,” said PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera, citing the great disparity in how pet owners used to treat purebred dogs and aspins.
The National Aspin Day celebration will feature a Grand Aspin Parade, Pet Breakfast Buffet, the Giant “I LOVE MY ASPIN” Formation, and the PAWS Aspin Club Meet-Up, with participation from PAWS Celebrity Ambassadors.
